Just got a switch for my soon to be 8 year old daughter that's sitting on the Xmas tree so I will be going through these same life lessons/growing pains in the coming weeks. Wish me luck and if all else fails hopefully my Bart Simpson improves.
I had a similar issue with my kid and a skateboard. I think it's not a "kids these days" issue so much as once kids cross into that mid- to late childhood stage it's hard to get used to the fact that most big-ticket toys/games/equipment comes with a learning curve. It's a bit frustrating for all involved; I think it's one of the reasons millennial parents put their kids in lessons for anything and everything. Props to you for working through it!
My kid recommendation would be the Story Pirates podcast. My kids are obsessed. https://www.storypirates.com/

Motivating our daughter to stick with something might be the hardest parenting challenge thus far.
